Gilbert Joseph Albiston, age 78, of Vernal, Utah, died on October 17, 2004, in the Uintah Care Center. He was born June 6, 1926, to Aseph and Rosamond Smith Albiston in Soda Springs, Idaho. Albiston graduated from William Smith High School in Aurora, Colorado in 1944, and he served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to July 18, 1946. He married Mary Cronquist November 14, 1948. They were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS TEmple on June 18, 1951.
Albiston owned and operated Gil's Bakery from 1946-1951, ran Gil's Appliance and Service, and was a life insurance agent with Beneficial Life, Amoco Life Insurance Company and others. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, and served in many positions including: Branch President of the Alameda Naval Station Naval Base Branch; Sunday School Superintendent; was in the Artesia Barnch Presidency, with Glade Sowards and Lloyd Winward; YMMIA President; Craig Stake and Meeker Stake High Council, and executive secretary; Branch President of the Eagle Valley Branch, State Missionary; Extraction Director in the Meeker Stake; Assistant Ward Clerk in the Glines, Utah Stake. He also served as a Temple ordinance worker in the Denver Temple from 1992-1996 and in the Vernal Temple from 1997-2004.
Albiston is survived by his wife, Mary, of Vernal; three children: Gladys (Steve) Lehnhof, Redlands, CA; Gary (Rebecca) Albiston, American Fork, UT; Beverly (Mark) Byers, Rangely, CO; 21 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; and a niece SHaron Nelson, Solomon, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Ruth Track, son in law Steve Lehnhof, great grandson Brock Albiston, and a nephew Larry Bassett.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 21, at 10 a.m. in the Vernal 4th Ward Chapel, located at 235 East 600 South. Family and friends may call on Wednesday evening, from 6-8 p.m., at the Spafford Funeral Home, and on Thursday, from 9-9:45 a.m. at the chapel. Interment will be in the Rangely, Colorado Cemetery, with military honors, under direction of the Spafford Funeral Home..
