A Brief History of life Well Lived.
Joy was born on Thanksgiving Day, 1928, to Lucy and Roy Norman, she was the middle child and only daughter. Joy often made jokes about her parents getting a baby instead of a turkey. Her parents moved back and forth between Colorado and Long Beach, California so their children could go to school in the winter. Joy had two brothers who passed away before her. Joy's family moved to Long Beach permanently in 1939 and then to Hemet California in 1942 where she graduated from high school. Then she moved to Colorado where she was a secretary for the New Jersey Zinc Co. It was here that she met the love of her life, Chuck Dump. They met at a party and it was "love at first sight" they were engaged in two weeks and married 9 months later. They started their life as an Air Force family that lasted 31 years. Nine months and three days after their marriage, Norm Roy arrived, and 3 years later Karen Alice was born.
They were moving every few years and Chuck's tours of duty included Oregon, Colorado, California (two tours), Morocco, Arizona and Hawaii. They loved to travel and visited Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Hong Kong, Philippines, Japan, Korea, Canada and Thailand. After Chuck retired from the military they settled in Tucson, Arizona. From this home base, they visited all but seven of the states and spent their summers in Colorado, where they were avid trout fisherman, they also loved to fish in Canada for salmon.
Joy was passionate about music and singing and she was a member of the chapel choir in every place they were transferred. Her family remembers well that she was always singing and humming around the house. Joy was also active in PTA, Officers Wives Club, and the German Club in Tucson. Joy was a wonderful cook, avid reader, exceptional scrabble player, current events participant and did 3 crossword puzzles a day. She also loved Las Vegas and Cypress Court's "Wheel of Fortune," as was evident by the "large" amount of Cypress bucks she left behind.
Joy's world changed for ever, when her beloved husband of 54 years passed away on their wedding anniversary, from complications of Alzheimer's. Her family urged her to move closer and she moved to Cypress Court and soon adopted it as her "home." This was made possible by the loving atmosphere and caring staff members who made her feel as if she was a member of their family. We will be forever grateful for their dedication and constant support.
Her life when she was well, was family filled and she shared joyously as we welcomed 2 new son in laws and later her beloved great grand children Dreydan Estrada (3) and Isla Rowe (2). Joy is also survived by her two children and their spouses Karen (Henry) Austin, and Norman (Dianna) Dump. Grand children Melissa (Brian) Rowe, Dana (Daniel) Estrada, Travis Dump, and Cassandra Dump.
The last few years were filled with medical trials and disappointments. Eventually the numerous ailments pulled her to heaven and we do not dwell on the facts of her death but celebrate the beauty of a life extremely well lived. Even though it was hard at times, Joy truly lived up to her name.
