RUTH PIERCE: 1919-1989
Ruth Violet Pierce, 69, died at the Routt Memorial Hospital in Steamboat Springs on Tuesday, Jan. 17,1989. Services, conducted by her grandson, the Rev. Patrick Zabel, were held in the United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21. Interment was in the Steamboat Springs Cemetery. Mo Hogue and Tyke Pierce, accompanied on the organ by Eddie Edwards, sang "One Day at Time" and "Daisy a Day." Pallbearers were Joel, Shawn, Jason, Justin and Cal Pierce, Troy Zabel and Gabriel Holt. Honorary bearers were Bill Freeman, Jay MacFarlane, Don Overmeyer, Randy Taylor, Corky Heid and Roy Lewis. Born in Steamboat Springs on May 19, 1919, Ruth was the daughter of Joel and Pearl Ohman Anderson. Ruth's father was a friend and partner of Carl Howelsen. Joel and Carl were together in the masonry business for six years, after which Joel became sole proprietor. Joel did all the rock work at the springs, rodeo grounds and swimming pools in
Steamboat Springs. Ruth was raised in Steamboat Springs and completed her schooling here. During high school, she won the oratorical contest. She sang a solo for then-Governor Ed Johnson at a special banquet in Denver. Her avocations included fishing, cooking, bowling, needlework and her family. She married W. Lloyd Pierce in Denver on July 19, 1939. For 35 years she was co-owner and operator of the W. L. Pierce Construction Co. She leaves her widower of Hayden; two sons, Thomas J. Pierce and Lloyd "Tyke" Pierce of Steamboat Springs; two daughters, Carron Zabel of Hayden and Debra Holt of Craig; two brothers, Ronald S. Anderson of Steamboat Springs and Lyman Anderson of Lafayette; one sister, Martha Ursich of Steamboat Springs; her 92-year-old mother, Pearl V. Anderson of Steamboat Springs; one aunt, Anita Grummons of Little Valley, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
