Jimmie R. Looney, 75, of Grand
Junction passed away Wednesday,
December 7, 2011, at Hospice
Palliative Care, after a
lengthy battle with lung cancer.
Jimmie was born in McCrory,
Arkansas, on October 31, 1936, to
Roy and Lavenia Looney.
Jimmie spent his childhood
farming with his dad, brothers,
and sister. Jimmie attended a one room country school complete
with a outhouse. He was fond of telling his daughters that he walked
up hill both ways in two feet of snow when they would complain
about walking to school. After completing two years of college, he
enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served 20 years.
Jimmie married Joyce Gibson on December 4, 1964, in Winterhaven,
California. Jimmie was serving in the U.S Navy. After Jimmie
retired from the Navy, he and Joyce lived in Minnesota to be
closer to family. While visiting family in Grand Junction, they decided
they liked the climate and moved here in 1979 where they
have resided since.
After a few years of retirement, Jimmie decided he wanted to go
back to work and he joined the staff at the Veterans Administration
where he worked as a boiler technician until retiring again three
years ago.
Jimmie was a loving dad and when the family lived in San Diego,
he and his oldest daughter, Deb, would frequently attend San Diego
Padre baseball games.
Jimmie’s other loves were fishing and hunting. Jimmie and Lisa,
his youngest daughter, enjoyed many hours fishing together. He and
Joyce and their grandchildren would make yearly trips back to Minnesota
where he taught his grandkids how to fish. Jimmie created
many memories for his grandchildren which they’ll enjoy for the
rest of their lives. He also enjoyed gardening and his tomatoes,
green onions, and radishes were a big hit with family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Joyce, survivors include his two daughters,
Deb of Phoenix, AZ, and Lisa of Grand Junction, CO; three grandchildren,
Justin, Tyler and Megan; one brother, Aubrey; one sister,
Bonnie; one great-grandchild, Talon; and many friends. Jimmie was
preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Gerald.
Visitation will be Saturday, December 10, 2011, from 1-3:00 p.m.,
followed by services at 3:30 p.m. at Martin Mortuary.
Military services will be Monday, December 12, 2011 at 10:00
a.m. at Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Roice Hurst Humane
Society, 3320 D 1/2 Road, Clifton, Colorado, 81520.
