Howell Wayne Johnson was born Oct. 13, 1946, to Altie and Jessie Johnson (both deceased) in Rusk, Texas. He had three sisters, Claudia, Linda and Vicki, and he had four brothers, JO, Mike, David and Ronnie. He had 24 nieces, 17 nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was known by several names during his life. Most people called him by his middle name, Wayne. His siblings called him Hoot. His favorite was probably Poppa.
Candy and Wayne were married 33 years. His children include Cristal, Cody, Wessley, Kane (married to Alyssa) and Kindra (married to Jermaine). His grandchildren are Jayanna, Jerry, Matthew, Elainea, Elissa, Jordan, Connor, Carson and Cataleeya. If anyone asked him what his proudest accomplishments were, other than being a Christian, he would say his children and grandchildren. He loved all his family and especially his family in Christ.
Wayne joined the Navy at age 16 in October 1962. He went on to become a truck driver and instructor, but his favorite job was working on a ranch. He loved hunting and guiding, as well. One of his greatest joys, however, was reading the Bible. In 1979, his family came to Colorado and lived in Meeker before moving to Oak Creek where he worked on the Green Ranch and lived in South Rourt ever since.
When Kane and Kindra became involved in youth group, they encouraged him to start going back to church. He renewed his faith in the Lord, and the family was baptized in 2006. He became ill in August 2011 and was diagnosed with glioblastoma multi front. He was hospitalized at the Denver and Grand Junction VA. He came home for Christmas but was admitted back into the VA Hospital for a short time. He was home the last two months, in DeBeque. On the night of May 2, 2012, he quietly went to meet his Lord.
A memorial and celebration of life was held July 28 at Yampa Bible Church.
