Harrison B. Rhodes, 89, passed away June 12, 2012, at Sunrise Senior
Living in Silver Spring, MD. Born in Rockville Centre, Long
Island, NY and raised in Plainfield, NJ, he married Jean McNaught
on December 22, 1948, in Hackensack, NJ and they raised their
family in Paramus, NJ and Amherst, NY. In 1981, they moved to
Grand Junction, CO.
Dr. Rhodes was a veteran of World War II, having served in the
US Army Infantry as a member of the 86th Blackhawk Division in
Europe and the Pacific. A graduate of Columbia University where
he earned his PhD, he was employed as a chemical engineer with
Union Carbide in Niagara Falls, NY and Grand Junction, CO for
many years before retiring. After retiring he enjoyed traveling with
his wife to their beach house on Long Beach Island, NJ and to many
destinations around the world.
Over the years he enjoyed many activities including swimming, ice
hockey, tropical fish care, photography, and gardening. He was a
certified Master Gardener for the Colorado State University Extension
Service in Mesa County, CO. He also was a member of the 86th
Blackhawk Association, Theta Tau Professional Engineering Fraternity,
and the Carbide Retirees Club.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jean, who passed away in
2003; his parents, Stuart and Eleanor (Bateman) Rhodes, and his
brother, Roger Rhodes. He is survived by his daughters, Karen A.
Rhodes of Silver Spring, MD, and Pamela Rhodes Rogers of Rochester,
NY; his sons, Bruce H. Rhodes of Kent, WA, and Jeffrey M.
Rhodes of Fairport, NY; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be held at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave.,
Fanwood, NJ on Monday at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be one hour
prior to the service. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in
Scotch Plains, NJ.
