Minnie McKenzie - May 9, 1889

Mrs. George S. Wilkinson This community was saddened greatly Friday morning, September 7, at the news of the death on the previous evening of Mrs. George S. Wilkinson, at a hospital in Grand Junction. Mrs. Wilkinson had been quite ill for about six weeks. Her condition became such about three weeks ago, that her daughter, Mrs. Moulton Chambers of Eagle went to her bedside, and the first of last week Mr. Chambers was called to Grand Junction. Sunday she was removed to a hospital and Thursday morning an operation for the removal of gaul [sic] stones, the cause of her ailment, was performed in a forlone hope of saving her life. The effort, however, was fruitless and life passed out that evening. A girl of about ten years of age, in the early eighties, Mrs. Wilkinson accompanied her parents to the Eagle river valley from their home in New York state where the deceased was born. Her father, A.D> McKenzie, was first located on what is now known as the Red Mountain ranch, where he was manager for eastern owners, who operated a cattle business. He later homesteaded a farm now owned by H.K. Brooks. On reaching young womanhood she was married to Geo. S. Wilkinson, then a rising young cattle man and farmer, and soon after they moved to what has since been known as the Wilkinson ranch, and Mr. and Mrs. Wilkinson became among the foremost citizens of the valley and of the county, both being widely known and admired. Four years ago her husband passed away, and shortly after she moved to Grand Junction where her sister and father were living. There was no more beloved woman in this valley than Mrs. Wilkinson, and her passing is greatly mourned. The body was brought to Eagle Monday morning and that evening, simple but appropriate services were held at the Methodist church under direction of Rev. T.B. McDivitt, which were attended by lifelong friends from all over the county. During the services Mrs. R.R. Crie very touchingly sang two vocal solos. The body was followed from the church to the cemetery where it was laid to rest beside the bodies of her husband, son and grandson. The deceased is survived by her father, A.D. McKenzie, and sister, Mrs. Jos. Moser of Grand Junction; and a daughter, Mrs. Moulton Chambers of Eagle.
