Warren O. Fread was born April 1, 1929, in New Llano, La., the son of Warren H. and Vivian (Parker) Fread. Warren moved with his family to Hayden in 1933, where he attended school through the eighth grade. He went to high school in Craig.
Warren joined the Navy in 1948 and served for 25 years, five months and four days, retiring as a senior chief machinist’s mate. He served on nine different ships.
He married Sylvia R. Higginbothan on Sept. 27, 1955, in Springfield, Mo. They made their home in various places while Warren was in the Navy, including Norfolk, Va.; San Diego; and for a time, in Craig, when Warren was the Navy recruiter.
Following his discharge from the Navy, Warren returned to Craig and worked 19 years as a heavy equipment operator with the Moffat County Road and Bridge Department. He then worked for Cook Chevrolet as a car shuffler.
Warren was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge #1577, where he had served as exalted ruler, and a lifetime member of VFW Post #4265. He enjoyed square dancing.
Warren died Dec. 6, 2011, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was 82.
Warren is survived by his wife, Sylvia Fread, of Craig; his daughter Deborah (Rodney) Bangert, of Denver; his son Warren R. (Lynette) Fread, of Meeker; his grandchildren Theodore and Wayne Bangert, Ashley Tara and Blayne Fread; and his brother Walter (Lois) Fread, of Vernal, Utah.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Dorothy Crabtree and Clara Fread.
Cremation has taken place, and memorial services were held Dec. 12, 2011, at Grant Mortuary with Mervin Johnson officiating. Military honors were by the Navy and VFW Post #4265.
