Carl Medvesk, a lifelong resident of Hayden, passed away Aug. 31, 2011, at the Doak Walker Care Center in Steamboat Springs.
Carl was born May 28, 1923, to Leo and Justina Medvesk in Denver. When his mother passed away, the family moved to Oak Creek, where Carl attended school and subsequently graduated from Oak Creek High School. After graduation, Carl enlisted in the Navy, attending boot camp in Idaho. He then was called to serve in World War II from 1941 to 1944. He would ferry goods and soldiers across the Pacific Ocean, taking 30 days and nights nonstop with no land in sight.
In 1950, Carl married Helen Canetti, of Steamboat Springs. They moved to California, where Carl worked in the redwood logging camps in Garberville and Ukiah. From this union, Barbara and Gary were born.
Carl’s love for hunting and fishing brought the family back to Colorado in 1963, and permanent roots were established. Carl owned and operated a small trailer court by the Routt County Fairgrounds in Hayden and worked construction, including construction of the Hayden Station power plant. He also worked at Hayden Cemetery. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and the Denver Broncos. He was a member of the Benjamin J. Hofstetter American Legion Post No. 89 in Hayden and the Hayden Congregational Church.
Carl was preceded in death by Helen, his wife of 47 years; a sister, Veda Jakovac; and his parents.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara (Joe) Salazar; his son, Gary (Joan) Medvesk, of Hayden; grandchildren Joe (Andrea) Salazar, Toby Salazar, Levi (Sherri) Salazar, Kim, Jeni and Graig Medvesk; and great-grandchildren Chase, Holli, Lanette, Shaelynn, Garrett, Ryan, Jadyn, Kenyen and Tayden.
A service was held Sept. 10, 2011, at Hayden Congregational Church. Honorary pallbearers were all of Carl’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
