Helen Louise Pierce, a longtime Oak Creek resident, died Feb. 4, 2009, at the Doak Walker Care Center in Steamboat Springs. She was 86.
Helen was born March 7, 1922, in Whitewater, the daughter of Floyd and Sylvia (Smith) Pierce. She moved to Oak Creek with her family in 1928 and graduated from Oak Creek Union High School in 1940. Following high school, Helen attended business college for two years.
Helen worked as a teller at Routt Federal Savings and Loan (which later became Alpine Federal Savings and Loan) until her retirement.
Helen was very active in the community. She was instrumental in opening the South Routt Medical Center and served for many years as president of the board of directors. She also volunteered as a manager of the South Routt Senior Apartments until stepping down in 1999. In earlier years, she was a member of the Rebecca Lodge.
Helen enjoyed doll collecting, leatherwork, painting, walking and skiing.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers James and Richard Pierce.
At her request, no services will be held, and she will be buried next to her parents in the Oak Creek Cemetery.
