William Robert “Bob” Boris, 83, of Hingham, Mass., and Vail, died peacefully at home on March 7.
Born Feb. 26, 1931, in Queens, N.Y., he grew up in Howard Beach. In 1951, he was drafted in the Korean War, arriving there as radio operator and jeep driver and was swiftly promoted to official army correspondent. His efforts during those 17 months lauded him a bronze star (meritorious). After six years of night school working full time, he graduated from Fordham University. During that time he courted Gisela Schneider, of Siegen, Germany. They met in Lake George, N.Y., and married in 1960.
Bob started his career as an industrial engineer before switching to magazine publishing. During his 30 year career, the highlight was being recruited to Boston to start up Inc. Magazine. He is best remembered for his pet sales phrase, “Nose to nose is where you close.”
Bob was a passionate skier who enjoyed many days on the slopes with family and friends and also enjoyed golf, hunting and windsurfing. He was a 30-year member of the Cohasset Golf Club and former member of both Aspetuck Valley Country Club and Killington Ski Club. He was also a founding member of The Killington Trio, well known for performing acoustic music on skis. Bob was an avid joke teller, cherished for his ability to spin long tales.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Gisela, children and grandchildren Prisca Boris and Rick Petrillo, Kendra, Michael and Maeve McKinley, Ji, Hong, Tien, Duy, Thinh, and Tory, Ethan, Kyle and Cayla Van Lam. Bob was the caring brother of Tom Boris and the late Janet Sarter and loved his many nieces, nephews and grand nephews.
