Eliza May Bridenbaugh, May 17, 1906--March 21, 2005.
Eliza May BRIDENBAUGH passed away March 21, 2005. She was 98.
Eliza was born May 17, 1906, in Como, to Lewis and Birdie KING. She was raised on the family ranch in Minturn, where she attended school. Upon graduation, she attended nursing school at the Red Cross Hospital in Salida, where she earned her registered nurse's cap in 1926. Eliza was a nurse in Gilman, Denver and Glenwood Springs.
She married Quinter BRIDENBAUGH in 1928. He preceded her in death in 1952.
In 1955, Eliza joined the Native Service in Alaska, where she nursed Eskimo people in various towns and remote villages for 13 years. She received a superior performance award from the chief of epidemiology for her documentation of the use of gamma globulin the the treatment of measles on the St. Paul islands.
She retired from the service, and at age 69, joined the Peace Corps and served in Botswana, South Africa.
In her 80s, Eliza would take the night shift to provide care for her suffering friends by their bedsides.
She was preceded in death by son, Calvin BRIDENBAUGH; grandson Donald VAN HOOSE; sisters Lucy WILLIAMS and Ellen MANN; and brothers Charles and Clinton KING.
She is survived by her daughter, Eva (Donald) VAN HOOSE; sister Edith KING; brother Kenneth KING; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Eliza served humanity all her life. She will be sorely missed.
