WESLEY HENRY SCHLEGEL

Wesley Henry Schlegel passed away Feb. 27, 2002, at his home in Burns. He was born Feb. 8, 1927, in Eagle to Clyde and Ida Schlegel.
Wes’ heart was always home on the ranch. He spent most of his life there except for the time he spent in the military and a few years spent in California when he and his wife, Mary, were first married.

As a youth, Wes worked on the ranch and helped his dad do some outfitting. Wes attended the Catamount School in early years where he and his sister, Jessie, rode their horses to and from school. He graduated from Gypsum High School in 1945.

Wes served his country in the Army from 1945 to 1947, where for a while he was stationed in Italy. He as a lifetime member of American Legion Post 195 in McCoy. Mary and Wes were married April 30, 1953. They raised a large family of four sons and two daughters. Their family also included other kids that came to live with them for several years, maybe just for the summer. Wes put them all to work, too.

Together with his family, they built a good-sized cattle operation. Satisfaction for him was to go out and irrigate, ride for cattle and just generally work. Wes liked to accomplish something and to do it right now. He believed in the good-neighbor policy and was ready to help brand, build or whatever was needed to get the job done.

Wes was an avid outdoorsman. At first it was probably out of necessity to have food, but it was what he loved: to be out hunting, fishing or working with the livestock.

Summers were filled with lots of fishing. Wes knew where the best fish were in the beaver dams on Castle and usually made a trip once a year to the Piney River.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clark and Norman Schlegel. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of 48 years, sister Jessie Luark; two daughters, Janice Price (Lou) and Melinda Hammer (Steve); four sons, Bill (Jill), Sumner (Karen), Rod (Jackie) and Randy (Sherri); 18 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held in McCoy March 2, 2002. He was buried at the McCoy Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Wesley Schlegel memorial fund in care of the Mesa National Bank, P.O. Box 4660, 212 Chamber Ave., Eagle, 81631, Attn.: Earlene McGinnis
