Paonia resident, Dennis Richards, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, October 2, 2014, at his residence in Paonia, CO. He was 73 years old.
A public visitation will be held Tuesday, October 7, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Paonia, CO. A funeral service for Dennis will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Paonia, CO with Bishop Scott Morley presiding. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery.
Dennis was born on January 24, 1941, to Ike and Arleen Richards. He spent his childhood in Somerset, CO. He attended school in Somerset and Paonia, graduating from Paonia High School in 1960. During his life he worked in off-road construction, and the coal mining industry, as an operator, mechanic, and electrician. In 2005 he retired from Arch Coal in Somerset, CO.
The most important thing in Dennis’ life was family. In 1961 he married Mary Heidrich. Dennis loved hunting, fishing, four-wheeling and traveling. He never lost sight of the importance of his children and grandchildren. They were his greatest treasure.
Dennis was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He loved being of service to others. He had a unique sense of humor and was very witty. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Richards; one daughter, Jacqueline “Jackie” (Lawrence) Zeldenthuis of Crawford, CO; one son, Thomas “Tom” (Lisa) Richards of Hotchkiss, CO; six grandchildren, John and James Zeldenthuis, Jessie, Cody, Jake, and Katie Richards; five great-grandchildren, Layne, Easton, Jessie, Trig, and little
Presley; one sister, Faye Sudekum of Big Springs, NE; a special childhood friend, Lee and Pat Goldsbrough of Ravensdale, WA.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Paonia; one daughter, Jacquline Zeldenthuis of Crawford; one son, Thomas of Hotchkiss; one sister, Faye Sudekum of Big Springs, Nebraska; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
