Jean T. Dempsey, 68, of Newark, Del., formerly of Llangollen Est. in New Castle, Del., peacefully expired at Wilmington Hospital Dec. 5, 2001.

Jean was born in Lakewood, N.J., the only child of Martha Jobes Tomlin and Joseph Banks Tomlin.

She attended New Jersey schools and was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson University School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pa.

Since moving to Delaware in the mid-1950s, she worked as a private duty nurse.

She retired from Stonegates Nursing Facility in 1995.

Jean prided herself on her caring nursing ethics. She was an avid sports fan, reader and enjoyed a variety of crafts.

#Jean was a loving mother.

She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands, Sandra and James Sheil of Haddon Heights, N.J.; Cynthia and Mitch Cantele of Steamboat Springs; and Linda Ward Skehan and John T. Skehan Jr. of Hockessin, Del.

She also is survived by four stepsons and one stepdaughter, Robert Dempsey and wife Betsy of Worton, Md.; William Dempsey and wife Abbigal of Corner Ketch, Del.; Phillip Dempsey and wife Beverly and Connie Livasey and husband Bill, all of New Castle, Del.; and Bruce J. Ward of Sarasota, Fla.

She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Catharine V. Dempsey of Corner Ketch, Del.; three granddaughters, one grandson, 10 stepgrandchildren and 14 stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her second husband, Clarence Theodore Dempsey, who died in 1998. Her first husband, Joseph H. Ward, passed away in 1962.

A viewing with relatives and friends was from noon to 2 p.m. Dec. 9, 2001 at Chandler Funeral Home, 7230 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, Del. A funeral service followed. Burial will be at Saint Patrick's Cemetery in Ashland, Del.

Family and friends were invited to return to Saint Mary of the Assumption Church in Hockessin following the burial.
