Pelley Hannigan
February 5, 1944 - June 29, 2015
A friend once said he was "An ordinary man who has lived a cool and interesting life".
Our friend, Pelley Hannigan, 71, passed at the Grand Junction Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was born February 5, 1944, to Wilber and Bette Hannigan at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.
Pelley’s fondest childhood memories include summers with his grandparents, Emilio and Annie Cesario in the DeBeque and Parachute area where his grandfather was section foreman for the D&RG Railroad. It was a time of learning about trains and hunting and fishing up Roan Creek.
Watching Elvis on the Ed Sullivan Show sparked his love of
music, especially Rock ’n’ Roll. He learned to play by ear
practicing at the Roper Music Room. By his high school years
in the early 1960’s he and friends, Doug Green, Tony Heinz and Mike Justice formed their first band, The Mark 4. Pelley
adopted his coolest cool "Elvis" style with hair, hair spray,
sideburns and Zippo lighter nurturing his girl magnetism.
Pelley graduated and enlisted in the Air Force in 1962. He
served in Vietnam from September, 1965 to November, 1966,
assigned to Field Operations out of Saigon serving as a field
cook and mortician. Time off allowed him to play in the
revolving band, "The Rice Paddy Rangers".
Later his life included being a police officer in North Glenn, a
special Adams County Deputy Sheriff, bartender, cook, along
with many other day jobs that kept the music going. In 2004 he and Linda Lee Duke rekindled their old friendship forever
becoming soul mates supporting each other through life’s ups
and downs.
In 2015, Pelley lost his mother, Bette, his best friend, leaving
him with a missing piece of his heart. He attended her on a daily basis for nine years. He spoke of being with his mother again.
Preceding him in death were his parents, and half-brother,
William Allen Hannigan.
Survivors include soul mate, Linda Lee Duke; sister, Betty
Hannigan; uncle and aunt, John and Dorothy Cesario; nieces,
LynDee Sanford, and Gail Fogg, and Pelley’s family of friends.
Memorial services will be announced in September. Charitable donations to Wounded Warriors.
