Dean R. Read of Greeley died Feb. 7, 2001, at the Life Care Center. He was 74.

Dean was born April 24, 1926, in Holdredge, Neb., to Ellen (Pearson) and Roy C. Read.

He graduated from high school in Lakewood and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Suwannee in the Pacific corridor. After the war, he attended the University of Colorado-Boulder and then began working in the automobile business.

He married Beverly Nahring Dec. 19, 1948, in Denver. He worked in farm equipment sales at International Harvester and sold automobiles at Luby and Craig Chevrolet in Denver. He also worked as sales manager at Edwards Chevrolet in Greeley and as a dealer at Steamboat Motors in Steamboat Springs. In 1978, Dean and Beverly and their son, Scott, purchased a dealership, Read Motor Company, in Laramie, Wyo.

In 1987, he was elected president of the Laramie Auto Dealers Association. He was a 33rd degree Mason, member of the Edgewater Blue Lodge #159 AF and AM, Steamboat Lions Club, Brighton Rotary Club, Loveland Kiwanis Club, Greeley Saddle Club, lifetime member of the Scottish Rite in Denver and of VFW Post #4264 in Steamboat Springs. He was also a 4-H softball coach and loved the outdoors, fishing and horses.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly, of Greeley; a son, Scott, of Loveland; a daughter, Pamela, of LaSalle; three grandsons; three granddaughters; a great-grandchild; a sister, Virginia Lipscomb of Arvada; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service was held Feb. 10, 2001, at Allnutt Funeral Service-Macy Chapel in Greeley. Memorial donations may be made to the American Parkinson's Fund in care of Macy Chapel, 702 13th St., Greeley, CO 80631.
