John Allen Thulson, a longterm resident of Glenwood Springs
and Parachute, passed away on September 17, 2015, at the age
of 83.
Allen was born in Denver, Colorado on December 5, 1931, to
Arthur and Bertha Thulson. Following his high school graduation,
he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served for four years
during the Korean conflict. After his military service he enrolled
at the University of Colorado where he graduated from the
School of Law. He became a member of the Colorado Bar Association.
Allen began as a law clerk for Judge Jean S. Breitenstein in the
United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Judicial District.
After one year he accepted the position of Deputy District Attorney
with an office in Glenwood Springs. He joined the firm of
Delaney and Balcomb in November of 1965 where he practiced
until his retirement at age 75. His practice was varied, including
two terms as a director of Roaring Fork School District RE-1,
and ten years as City Attorney for Glenwood Springs.
Allen was united in marriage to Carol Hooley in Denver on
September 7, l956. Three sons were born to their marriage.
He was an avid golfer and skier and enjoyed many other outdoor
activities with his family and friends. A favorite pastime
was carving wooden caricatures.
Allen is survived by his wife of 59 years; three sons, Timothy,
Todd (Julie Rippy), and Troy (Molly Balcomb). He leaves behind
six beloved grandchildren, Tyler, Lauren, Taylor, Christopher,
Kate, and Ty.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial gifts to the
Nick Massaro Scholarship Fund or the Salvation Army.
A celebration of life gathering will be held on September 27 at
2:00 p.m. at the Grand Valley Recreation Center, 398 Arroyo
Drive, Battlement Mesa.
