Hugh M. Hyder died Oct. 11, 2000, in Naples Fla. He was 80.

Hugh was born July 24, 1920, in West Plains, Mo. He grew up in Denver and had residences in Steamboat Springs and Carbondale.

He served as a Navy pilot in World War II. He graduated from the University of Colorado with degrees in civil engineering and architecture, studying under his mentor and friend, Buckminster Fuller, with whom he pioneered the field of pre-cast concrete.

Hugh was the CEO of Hyder Construction and president of the International Board of Contractors. He was an avid pilot and sailor.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Naples, Fla.; three daughters, Claudia "Kelly" Kunkel of Steamboat Springs, Kathryn Outwater of Minnesota and Mary Gray of Scottsdale, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Claude, both of Denver; and a granddaughter, India Kunkel of Steamboat Springs.
