Angelina Merli
December 29, 1915 - December 3, 2015
Jean Merli died at HopeWest Hospice a few weeks short of her 100th birthday, after a short illness. She leaves behind many family and friends.
She was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York where she married her childhood sweetheart, Peter. Their life story took them over an army career from New York to California to Germany and Virginia,
eventually retiring in Florida. Jean was the complete wife and
mother raising three children, becoming a fabulous cook,
knitting or sewing any garment imaginable and also finding time to work in the Pentagon.
Jean achieved notoriety not only as the "cookie lady" but also
as the supreme knitter, making baby blankets for AIDS babies in hospitals and mailing cookies to friends and family in Europe
and to troops serving in Iraq. She was known for her constant
smile, amazing sense of humor, love of life, her readiness to
break into song at a moment’s notice and of course vanilla ice
cream with chocolate sauce!
Jean leaves three children; four grandchildren, and two greatgrandchildren with a third on the way!
She will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery alongside
her beloved husband, Peter, in April 2016.
