FORMER RESIDENT OF RED CLIFF DIES.
Reuben THOM, formerly a resident of Red Cliff, died at Lebanon, Ore., February 7, 1925, after an illness which began in December last. Interment took place at Lebanon.
Reuben THOM, sonof the late John and Mary THOM, was born in Ruggles township, Ashland County, Ohio, about 1847. In 1864 he enlisted in the Twelfth Ohio Independent Battery, Light Artillery, serving until after the end of the war. Soon after that he married Miss Amanda Hankinson and ....
About 1870 the family came by wagon to a point....apolis, Kan. On that Homestead Mrs. THOM died in 1879, leaving her husband and three sons, Immer, Cassius and Howard, to mourn her loss.
In 1880 the father came to Colorado, where he served as a timekeeper in the construction of the Gunnison extension of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. Later he joined his brother Frank THOM, who at that time was conducting the Star Hotel at Red Cliff.
Here he spent much time in mining. He married Miss Jennie MARTIN, who bore him three sons and a daughter, Clarence and Ralph being natives of Red Cliff. When the Denver and Rio Grande Railway Company was blasting a path through Red Cliff for the laying of the standard gage line in the 1880's, the memorable explosion which unroofed nearly the whole of Monument Street practically ruined Mr. THOM's house, and with the money which the company paid him, he removed his family to Lebanon, Ore. Mrs. THOM presented him with two more children, Faith and Herbert, and died but a few years ago.
With the exception of Immer, the oldest son, who died at Creede, Colo., the children are all living; Howard and Cassius in Kansas; Clarence at Wallace, Idaho; Ralph at Portland, Ore.; Faith at Lebanon, Ore.; Herbert who served in the World War, at last report in Cleveland, Ohio. All are married but Herbert and Faith, who is a widow. Mr. THOM's brother, Frank THOM, and their sisters, Margaret Jane, Susan and Dilemma are dead.
Clarence and Ralph, born at Red Cliff, are an honor to your town, Clarence being a college graduate and mining expert, and Ralph, who is a banker and will also be a lawyer, being a young man of keen intellect and strong on initiative.
Best wishes for your prosperity and a Greater Red Cliff.
Wm. B. THOM, New York, N.Y.
