Services were held Friday for Herman A. STEIN, a former Colorado legislator who lived his final years in San Clemente. Mr. STEIN, 86, died late Sunday night, June 21, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in La Jolla. He leaves his daughter, Margie Ann VICK of San Clemente, his son Alan STEIN of San Leandro, a sister Paulina COULTER of Chico, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many friends in San Clemente. His wife Marguerite preceded him in death. Born in Gypsum, Colo., Mr. STEIN was a blacksmith by profession. He practiced his trade with his father in Eagle, Colo. Over the years he served variously as undersheriff, assessor and treasurer of Eagle County before being elected to the Colorado House of Representatives. For years he served as president of the school board in Eagle County and as a member of the Eagle Town Council. Mr. STEIN was the owner and operator of the largest ranch in Eagle County. He also operated a ranch in Montana. For a time he was in the oil and gas business as a representative for the Socony Vacuum Oil Company. A World War I veteran, he served in France with the Armed Force. Later he was active in veterans affairs, serving two terms as commander of American Legion Post No. 150, Gypsum, Colo. Mr. STEIN was a grand master and a 40-year member of Masonic Castle Lodge No. 122 in Eagle. An avid outdoorsman, fisherman, and big game hunter, Mr. STEIN also was active in youth activities and served in various capacities with the Boy Scouts of America. Services were held Friday in Eagle.
