Dick Olsen
March 8, 1933 - February 28, 2016
Dick Olsen, whose given name was Horst Heinrich, was born on March 8, 1933, in Santa Monica, California.
Dick was proud of his German heritage, but disliked the name Horst because of the "bullying" he experienced during WWII. He changed his name to "Dick", a true American name.
After graduating from Canoga Park High School and entering
the Air Force, Dick married the love of his life, Jean Hatfield in
1952. He proudly served his country in the Korean War.
Dick owned his own roofing business in Southern CA before
moving to Durango, Colorado in 1971, where he worked in
construction as a project manager. In 1978, Dick and Jean
moved to Grand Junction, started Olsen Construction and built
custom homes for over 25 years.
Dick enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf. He loved
family gatherings and playing with his grandkids.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Jean and parents,
Walther and Emily Olsen. He is survived by brothers, Walther
Olsen (TX) and Hans Olsen (CA); son, Steve (Kathy) Olsen,
(Grand Junction); daughter, Donna (Greg) Kapp, (Denver);
seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In honor of the caregivers who helped Dick with the daily
tasks of his life, contributions may be made to the "Alzheimer’s
Caregivers Fund" c/o Wells Fargo Bank.
