Former police officer and Vietnam veteran William “Bill” Hayes died recently at the age of 59.

Hayes was born April 21, 1948, to Hubert (Tuffy) and Lois (Porter) Hayes. He grew up on the western slope of Colorado and after high school entered the Navy.

While in the Navy from August 1966 to April 1970, he served as an engineman third class on the USS Thomason and for two tours of duty in Vietnam as an emergency engine repairman on river assault craft in the Mekong Delta. He was wounded twice in the line of duty and received the Purple Heart and the Gold Star, said his son,Hank Hayes, of Gypsum.

Following military service, he entered law enforcement for the town of Aspen and the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office. Later he worked as a driver for United Parcel Service in Glenwood Springs, where he retired after 32 years.

Bill Hayes loved the outdoors, camping and Jeeping with his two sons, his brother said.

Hayes was preceded in death by his brother, Jim and sister Judy, and his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Paula; sons Hank and Ned; brothers Carl (Butch), Jerry and Ron; and sisters Becky (Slunaker) and Lisa (Chavez).
