EAGLE COUNTY'S FIRST VICTIM OF WORLD WAR

Early this year news came to Eagle of the death of a Minturn boy, killed in action during the raid on Pearl Harbor. At that time the paper was unable to learn the name and details of the death. This week the death of Eagle County's first hero of World War II was brought to the attention of the The Enterprise, and we are able to give the details. The young man giving his life for his country was Riley Brown, 21, former Minturn boy, and a brother of Lee Mercer of Minturn. Mr. Brown had enlisted in the US Navy prior to the outbreak of the war, and met death in the dirty attack of the Japs on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Word of his death was sent to his sister, living in New Mexico. The young man was born on the Piney in this county and attended school in Minturn. He also worked in the mine at Gilman.
