Medal Given Widow of Bob Berger

Mrs. Robert Berger was presented the Navy-Marine Medal awarded posthumously to her husband, Lt. (jg) Robert Berger for heroic action while a pilot aboard the USS Coral Sea. Lt Berger, a graduate of Eagle High School, was killed last June when his plane failed to engage the carrier 'arresting gear and bounced over the barricade as it attempted a landing. The citation stated Lt. Berger skillfully avoided a group of men and crashed into two planes parked in the bow of the carrier. The impact carried all three planes over the side of the vessel. The citation read “He sacrificed his life while saving the lives of many of his comrades.” Lt. Berger’s mother, Mrs Henry Berger and his sister, Mrs Wm. Loving, were among the 400 persons who attended the presentation ceremonies at the Naval Training center of the Denver Federal center. Lt. Commander C T Harbin, representing the commandant of the 9th naval district and the secretary of the Navy, made the presentation to Mrs. Berger, who was escorted to the rostrum by Capt. Stahl, commanding officer of Buckley Field and Lt- (jg.) Lyton Bauer, accompanied by six members of the United States Naval Reserve as honor guard. Mrs- Berger, the former Beverly Lundgren of Gypsum, is attending Colorado College of Education at Greeley at present.

LT. BERGER MISSING IN JET CRASH

Lt. Berger Missing in Jet Crash
Lt- Bob Berger, Eagle man, is reported missing in the Coral Sea area, following a crash of his Navy Jet. The message was received this afternoon by his mother, Mrs. Henry Berger in Denver, stating that Lt. Berger's jet crashed in a take-off, and that a search is still being conducted toy the Navy for the missing pilot- No further details were givenLt Berger left the states in May for a six months cruise in the Mediterranean, scheduled to return to the states in October. He flew his jet over his home town just before going overseas this spring. Mrs Berger has been living in Denver since the death of Mr. Berger, who died of a heart attack at his home in Eagle last September. She was ill in a Denver hospital when the word came from the Defense Department arrived today Lt. Berger’s wife, the former Beverly Lundgren of Gypsum, is living in Denver. A sister, Beatrice Berger Loving, is also living there.
