Dr. H. Stuart Holden passed away on July 1 at Cape Cod Hospital. He will always be remembered for his storytelling, sense of humor and beaming smile. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1924, he served in the Royal Navy during WWII. He graduated from the University of Glasgow with a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and came to the U.S. as a Marshall Plan Scholar. Dr. Holden was a keen athlete. Upon returning from the war in 1947-48, he played for Scotland in the International Rugby Match.
He began his career at Sentinal Motors in Shrewsbury, England; was a professor of management at Case University in Cleveland; worked for the Ford Foundation in Hydrabad, India; and worked for Diamond Shamrock, founding Electrode Corporation in Ohio and later opening an office in Geneva, Switzerland.
After retiring in 1985 to Vail in the winters and Chatham, Mass., in the summers, he spent his time cooking, gardening, skiing and traveling. He was a member of Wrights Trades House in Glasgow, Scotland, and a member of the Unitarian Church of Chatham. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara, and children Steve, of Northport, N.Y., Sandy (Cindy), of Milwaukee, Wis., and Connie Miller (Mark) of Vail; and grandchildren Mike (Jessica), Ryan (Elizabeth), Lexi, Kate and Tori.
