Former Minturn resident Frederico Hipolito Jaramillo, also known as “Nubes,” passed away on Friday.
Fred was born on April 4, 1929, to Fidel and Eleanor Jaramillo in Vallecitos, N.M.
Fred is preceded in death by both his parents; twin brother Orlando; brothers Fidel Jr., Adelido and Dennis Jaramillo; andsisters Andreita Jaramillo and Mabel Romero.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Selfa Jaramillo; daughters Julia (David) O’Brien, Mildred (Julian) Romero, Rebecca (Eric) Mondragon, Dorothy (Eduardo) Eastwood, Bertha Jaramillo; and sons Billy (Elizabeth) Jaramillo and George Jaramillo.
He has one sibling, Olivia (Joe) Harding of New Mexico, and several brother/sister-in-laws. He was blessed with 18 grand children and 21 great-grand children and numerous nieces and nephews
Fred served two years in the Army and is a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Alamosa.
Fred and Selfa were married on Oct. 30, 1952, and they lived in New Mexico for a few years. In 1955, they moved to Minturn, where Fred worked for the New Jersey Zinc Mine in Gilman for 23 years until they closed. After that, he worked for Vail Associates and the Eagle County School District for several years until he retired
He moved to Alamosa in 2002, where he died peacefully in hospice care.
Fred had a passion for playing horseshoes and was a member of the Eagle Club for several years. He also loved to go camping, fishing and hunting in his younger days. He also loved making and carving things out of wood and yard selling. Some of his wood work included kitchen hutches, chairs, coffee and end tables.
Many will remember Fred as being a very caring and loving man with a great sense of humor. He helped many people in need by providing them with food, clothing and a place to stay. He and his wife were great dancers and many might remember them winning several contests for the jitterbug dance. Even during his time of illness he still shared a few moments of dancing with his wife and daughters.
Fred will be dearly missed by all his family.
The rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the Sacred Heart Church, 715 Fourth St. in Alamosa. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Sacred Heart Church.
