DRINK HABIT CAUSE OF SUICIDE
Despondent over his ill health and the fact that he was unable to conquer the drink habit, Gus Meyers, who for the past eleen years has run a Rio Grande section gang near Minturn, shot and killed himself at four oclck yesterday afternoon in his room at the Sullivan rooming house in that ctiy.
Meyer was a German of considerable education and came west about fifteen years ago . His intelligence and training would have fitted him for a more remunerative position but his intemperate habits forced him to a place on the section gang and since that time he has been made foreman . His heavy drinking brought on a number of ailments from which he has suffered intensely in the past few months . Unable to conquer his craving or be relieved from his maladies , he recently became moody and unusually taciturn , occasionally declaring to his men that he thought he would kill himself as he couldnt quit getting drunk . Yesterday afternoon ho left his gang in charge of an assistant and went to his room where he took a revolver an \ without a word or leaving a note ,

placed the muzzle of tho heavy calibored weapon between his teeth and pulled the trigger . The report , muffled by the man _ s mouth , was not heard by others about the place but a few moments later some one passed by thn door and _looked in , and beheld the almost decapitated form of Meyer on _tlu floor whero it had slipped from its place on the bed . The whole top of tlio head was shattered , with _tjrains and blood , blackened by the fire from _th-j pistol , oozing i n a sickening mass from tho almost unrecognizable face . Meyer had considerable money which will more than p < iy the expenses of his funeral . Ho had no family and so far as is known no relatives . Special Agent A . L . French of tho D . & B . G . _wttB in the city this morning and-made an investigation ., to ascertain i £ there had been any foul play . —Grand Junction Sentinel .
