Herbert Clarence High, 94,
was born to Robert Henry and
Bessie Mae (Beasley) High on
September 9, 1922, on the
High family Squaw Creek
homestead in Eagle County,
Colorado. Herb was one of 11
children. He attended the
Squaw Creek one room
school house until high school. Herb attended and graduated
from Eagle County High School in Eagle, CO.
He married Esther Wellington prior to enlisting in the U. S.
Army for service during WWII. A son, Daryl William High, was
born to this union on February 29, 1943. Herb’s army tour was
in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. After discharge from the
army the family moved to the Grand Junction area, where Herb
worked for several years as a salesman for the Biggs and Kurtz
Hardware Company of Grand Junction, Mesa Jewelers and
Sam’s Club in the jewelry department. Herb and Esther divorced
while in Grand Junction and Herb later married Trudy McGraw
of Eagle County.
During his life, Herb owned and operated several businesses,
the last being the Grand Valley Pipe Company in Grand
Junction.
He is survived by sisters, Blanche Mauro of Broomfield, CO,
and Glenda Wilson of Colona, IL, and brother, Michael High of
Chattanooga, TN.
A military memorial graveside service will be held at the
Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado, 2830
Riverside Parkway, Grand Junction, on Tuesday, July 18th, at
1:00 p.m.
