Samuel L. Salatino, 91, passed away on December 4, 2017. He was the fifth child born to Charles and Minnie (Perry) Salatino on April 22, 1926, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado. He attended school in Clifton, Colorado and graduated from Central High School in 1944. After high school he served with the Navy in the Pacific Theatre on the U.S.S. LST 873 for 2 and one half years. When finished with his service in the Navy, he returned to Colorado where he graduated from the Colorado State College of Education and began a 30 year career as a school teacher. He was introduced to Mary Louise Simonetti, the love of his life, by family, and they were married on December 27, 1954 in Grand Junction and would have celebrated 63 years of marriage this month. They were blessed with three children, Steven, Valerie and Sheree, who have brought them great joy. Sam’s first teaching job was at Fruita Junior High School, where he taught seventh grade. He later taught shop, physical education, and driver’s education in District 51 schools. He was a seasonal park ranger at Colorado National Monument for 25 years. His hobbies were laying brick and creating rock fireplaces and walls in houses around town. He also built flagstone signs and a drinking fountain at the Colorado National Monument, which remain there today. After Sam retired from teaching, he, along with his son-in-law, wife, and other family members, built, owned and operated Clifton Automotive Center Car Wash and Lube Center. Sam took great pride in this business where he worked for 25 years until he retired due to health reasons. After retiring, Sam volunteered at the Catholic Outreach soup kitchen where he was a very dedicated volunteer. Sam was well-liked and had many friends. He loved coaching and had a natural athletic ability and in his younger years enjoyed most outdoor sports. Later, his hobbies included vegetable and flower gardening and tinkering with and repairing almost anything. In addition to Mary Louise, Sam is survived by his children, Steven Salatino, Phoenix, AZ; Valerie (Douglas) Nieman, and Sheree Mayo, Sugarland, TX, and his grandchildren, Lauren (Bryan) Carei, Nicholas Salatino, Anthony Salatino, and Benjamin (Carly) Mayo. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, and a brother-in-law, Dan Price. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Minnie Salatino, and sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn (Charles) Hacker, Mary (Robert) Strain, Betty Salatino and Selma Salatino and his son-in-law, David Mayo.
