Dead assailant a retired Chicago cop, police say

A man who died Sunday after apparently trying to kill an Edwards woman, was a retired Chicago policeman in disguise. Eagle county sheriff A.J. Johnson and investigator Jeff Beavers revealed the bizarre details of the Sunday attack at a Tuesday news conference.
The victim, 52 year old Rita Quam, of Singletree, was gathering rocks at the Edwards Riverwalk center, when the assaliant,, Arthur Smith, approached Quam and fired at least one shot from a handgun equiped with a silencer.
