Clifford Lee Shriver
passed away peacefully
January 26, 2022, at
his home in Cedaredge,
Colorado, at the age of 93.
Born March 28, 1928,
in Montrose, Colorado,
to Leland M. Shriver and Vera Mae (Trout) Shriver,
Clifford was raised in Mesa, Colorado, where fishing
and hunting on the Grand Mesa was his favorite
pastime. Fishing remained his favorite activity; every
vacation involved fishing from Mexico to Alaska and
hundreds of places in between. He went to high school
and played basketball in Mesa until 1944, when at the
age of 16, he joined the Navy, with his father’s consent.
The war ended just as he was getting out of boot camp
in San Diego.
Mesa College in Grand Junction was the next stop
after getting home from the Navy in 1946. He graduated
two years later with a degree in Business and Land
Surveying.
Clifford and Fern Shriver were married in 1947, and
lived in Mesa, Colorado, until moving to Green River,
Utah, in the early 1950’s, with four little kids in tow.
There, Clifford started his land surveying business. He
had a long career with Union Carbide during the cold
war era, first surveying uranium mines, safety engineer
for the surrounding mines, and finally Production
Engineer, purchasing the uranium ore from area mines.
The family also lived in Dove Creek, Uravan, and
Nucla. Clifford and Fern lived in Nucla until retiring to
Cedaredge, Colorado. They were married 72 years until
Fern passed on September 7, 2019.
Clifford is survived by daughters, Doris Shriver
(John Boteler); Nancy Spirek (Tom Spirek), and
Gloria Shriver (Randy Ruedrich); son, Terry Shriver;
grandson, Brandon Shriver; niece, Yvonne Benedetti,
and nephews, Kent Franklin and Brent Franklin.
Clifford was also preceded in death by his grandsons,
Allen Spirek and Royal Spirek; brother, Lyle Shriver,
and sister, Nada Watts.
Clifford has gone fishing. The next time you go fishing
say a prayer for him.
Military Honors graveside service for Clifford and
service for Fern will be held at Orchard Mesa Cemetery
February 11, 2022, at 2:00 p.m.
