Bill Ray ‘Wolfgang’
Shoultz returned home on
October 20th, 2023 after
complications stemming
from West Nile Virus.
The memorial service will
take place at the Veterans
Memorial Cemetery in
Grand Junction, Colorado
on October 30th at 3 pm.
Born July 9th, 1936 in
Cleveland, Ohio to Elsie
(Norris) and Thomas I
Shoultz. Bill grew up in
the Cleveland area with
his older brother Carney.
Even then Bill was known
for his humor and sass.
Though his brother did not
find it humorous when Bill
ran Carney’s 1949 Ford red
and cream convertible into
the only telephone pole at a
Truckstop when he was in his teens.
After graduating from high school Bill entered the
Airforce. His hope was to fly an aircraft but at 6’3 he was
unfortunately too tall. His humor and sass continued, which
landed him on a remote Alaskan Island for the duration of
his service. He was proud to have served his country and
was often seen wearing one of his many Airforce Veteran
hats.
After completing his service, he settled in Grand
Junction, Colorado. According to Bill it was where he ran
out of gas, so he just stayed. He met and fell in love with
Liz Vivian and her daughter Vail. After marrying Liz he
formally adopted Vail as his daughter. The family was also
comprised of a variety of pets including horses. During
a trail ride one hot day Sniffer had enough of toting Bill
around and laid down in the middle of a stream soaking
both Bill and the saddle.
Bill had a variety of careers which included door to door
vacuum sales, owning an appliance business and TV marketing sales. He worked as a DJ for K-STR radio for many
years going by the name of ‘Wolfgang Shoultz’. The nickname followed him long after he left radio.
Humor followed him everywhere. He loved to make
people smile and laugh with jokes and retelling of his life
experiences. From finishing a ski race on Powderhorn by
going through the finish line backwards (while missing half
of his gear) to a variety of antics on the golf course including hitting a golf ball backwards off the tee box during a
tournament and flinging his golf bag into the pond only to
have to wade in waist deep to retrieve it because his car
keys were in the bag.
Family and Friends were key in his life. He would travel
to Laughlin, NV to hang out at the casino with his brother’s family. Lorie was his blackjack buddy for many years.
He loved spending time with his Veteran, Moose Lodge,
and Elk’s Lodge buddies playing poker. Bill enjoyed family
gatherings and supporting his grandchildren, often bringing
dessert to holiday dinners. One Thanksgiving he brought a
pie in a box and complained that it sounded sloshy in the
box. Later everyone was brought to tears laughing because
he had thawed an uncooked pumpkin pie. It became a running family joke.
Bill is survived by: Brother Thomas Carney Shoultz and
his wife Cynthia in CA. Daughter T. Vail Shoultz-McCole
and husband Mark McCole in CO. Grandson Jason McCole
and his fiancé Jenna Wojcik in TX and Grandson Derek
McCole in CO. Nephews David and wife Silvia in CA,
Jeffery and wife Deana in CA, and Steve’s widow Lorie
Shoultz in OR.
He is preceded in death by his mother Elsie M Schardt,
step-father Conrad A Schardt, nephew Steve, and ex wife
Liz.
Bill’s heart was bigger than his sense of humor. He supported The Roice Hurst Humane Society in CO and Best
Friends in UT. Please consider donating in his honor to one
of these organizations.
