Sophie S. KNIGHT of Paonia died Jan. 22 at Paonia Bethesda Care Center after a lengthy illness. She was 93.
Mrs.KNIGHT was born July 19, 1893, in Point Mountain,W. V., to David H. and Portie W. HAMRICK. She moved with her family to Renick, W. Va., where she spent her childhood and attended schools. She then attended Concord Normal School in West Virginia and became a teacher.
In 1917, she married Thomas E.KNIGHT in Carthage,Mo. They lived in Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Colorado. Mr. KNIGHT died in 1960.
Mrs. KNIGHT operated a restaurant in Minturn during World War II. After the war, she opened one of the first grocery stores in Rangely during the oil boom. She later returned to teaching and entered Western State College, graduating in 1953 with a bachelor of arts degree at the age of 60.
Mrs. KNIGHT taught school in Eagle County until age 68. She moved to Paonia in 1969 and build a house on Sunshine Mesa at Midway between Paonia and Hotchkiss.
She loved the outdoors, especially the mountains, and enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles and playing dominoes.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Jo SCHMIDT of Gypsum and Perlita GAUTHIER of Bisbee, Ariz.; two sons, V. Robert KERR of Fort Worth, Texas, and MacDonald KNIGHT of Hotchkiss; a brother, Taft HAMRICK of West Virginia; two sisters, Helen THORNTON of West Virginia and Ruth GAAL of Hotchkiss; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Family memorial services will be at a later date in Minturn, where Mr. KNIGHT is buried.
