"The Doan ranch was purchased from Mr. Doan by James P. Gates in about 1899. When J. P. Gates and Kate first moved to the Doan place, they lived in the small house to the left until the big house was built. 1940: Dr. James H. Cole, age 79 at time of photo in October, 1940. Dr. Cole is standing in front of the porch of a house, wearing a cap and suspenders. There are several racks of antlers hanging on the exterior of the house which appears to be log.
