22) Barbara Clark

Barbara Clark in 1931, approximately 25 years of age. The photo was one submitted with applications for teaching positions. Barbara taught elementary grades in Wolcott, Red Cliff and Gilman until her retirement in 1970 or 1971.

The Bar-Gay Ranch was originally the Hawley place. Gaylord and Barbara Clark bought the house and outbuildings; the land was a school section which they leased for 99 years.

A postcard of the Basalt Public School. The Basalt Public School was originally located in a small one-room frame structure until the late-1890s. The school was relocated to this building, which sat on the border between Eagle County and Pitkin County. In 1902, the building was expanded from a one-room school house to a four-room, two story brick building, pictured here. Studio portrait of Blanche Gay (later married Victor Dump), Red Cliff, Colorado. On the back of the photo: "Blanche Gay, sixteen years old, eighth grade graduation in 1906." [born Feb. 10, 1890] There has been some discussion (with no definitive answer) of this photograph given that another source says it is a wedding portrait.

36) Burns School

Burns school in 1976 (abandoned). Mrs. L. K. Toomer was one of the last teachers. Freda Lowe was the last cook. The Gates, Albertson, Benton, Toomer, Strubi, Luark, Schlegel, Wheelock, and Wurtsmith children went to this school (grades 1 through 8).

c.1880: Log cabin used for a school house, Red Cliff, Colorado. There were 5 pupils who attended and Dora McMillan was the teacher. One door, one window shown in a front-view with snow on the ground.
The cabin is behind the Reno Cafe & Bar, 127 Water St., Red Cliff. It has been used for many purposes over the years, including a garage. Jack Ages, Ilene Warren's father, lived there at one point.
