"Brush Creek Valley, Township 5 South, Range 84 West of the 6th Principal Meridian, the area at hte mouth of Breek Creek between the Eagle River and the railroad tracks and west of Brush Creek. Ditch is Lower Rule, Priority #137, Spring in 1884 by H.E. Rule. The ditches are located by right bank or left bank and this is determined by facing downstream. This is supposed to be the original settlers of the Brush Creek Valley."

The Buchholz homestead on Buchholz Mesa. Nicholas is at the far left; Mary is wearing a hat and standing near the door. John, Mary Louise and Beulah Buchholz are also in the picture. There are mounted riders at far right and cattle at midground.
Buchholz Mesa was sold to E. M. Tabor and Nick and John opened a livery business in Eagle.

The first chapter of the typescript "Early Days on the Eagle" written by MacDonald Knight. This chapter may be from his thesis (1953) or was part of the final published verison of the book (1964). After serving overseas in the army, he came home and moved directly to Holy Cross City, an isolated mining camp. This is the original John Cowden family homestead cabin, which was moved about a half a mile from it's original site on Bellyache. Jack Oleson reconstructed the cabin on the Diamond S ranch.
A tour of the ranch was conducted by the Eagle County Historical Society and the Diamond S Ranch on October 5, 2013.

Ethel Boies was born and rasied in Red Cliff, Colorado. In 1918, she married Howard G. Bayer, well-known in Minturn and Red Cliff through his involvement with many youth organizations. Ethel's typescript focuses on early days of Red Cliff and the surrounding areas of Eagle and Lake County (Leadville). Many mines, miners, mine benefactors, assay numbers, and mine locations are also mentioned.

Sallie Welsh (Hartman) was the first woman in Eagle County to graduate from college (University of Denver) and later served as Superintendent of Schools in Eagle County. She married the son of a friend of John Welsh. Charles Hartman was sent to work for John Welsh and a few years later married Sallie. They took over the ranch and lived there until 1930 when the ranch was lost due to financial problems. They had four children, three boys and a girl....

"When Renee and Charlotte Wolf bought the Ebert Ranch on Conger Mesa in 1973, this is how the house looked to them. It was built by Rudolph Ebert about 1912 or right after the homestead cabin was burned to the ground. Studio portrait of Edith and Louis A. Fenno, most likely a wedding portrait.
Edith Nilson and Louis Alton Fenno were raised and married in Leadville, Colorado. In 1910, they moved to Squaw Creek and in 1912, Fenno filed on a homestead there. They had three children: Mary, Ida and Louis C. Fenno. Louis died on Feb. 17, 1961; Edith died on Mar. 6, 1973.

"The John Ambos homestead cabin, built in 1903. This photo, taken in 1909, shows Fritz Arendt who was batching in it, his dogs and an assortment of firearms. Fritz, an early day ranch hand, hunter, trapper, Game Warden and poacher left the McCoy area for Utah about 1911 and never returned. The George Harris Ranch house in Yarmony Park in 1920. George married Julia Koski in 1915 and they filed on a 320 acre homestead in the southeast corner of Yarmony Park in 1916. "Julia's half brother and sisters, Frank, Sophia and Mary of Denver spent part of every year with them. Mary attended Yarmony School for several years in the early 1920's." -- McCoy Memoirs, p.290
