Kelley property up Homestake Rd., Forest Service Road 703. Ray Kelley had built a two story house and several other cabins between 1947 and his death in 1978. He had several mining claims in the area. The Forest Service dismantled the two story house after his death.
Ray Kelley walked into Red Cliff in the 1940s, pulling a red wagon, to do his grocery shopping.
This area is a popular picnic spot, with elk hunting in the big park above the cabin...

"Six miles due north of the Conger Mesa and five miles northeast of Volcano lies Long Park in the Routt National Forest. Here the Klumker family and a man named Blake took up 160 acre homesteads in 1912. This view of the Park in 1968 shows the Klumker House and near the road in the distance is the Blake cabin. Photo postcard of the Judd Lyon Ranch in Yarmony Park, about 1940. Lyon homesteaded in 1909, his closest neighbor being John F. Hudson, two and a half miles to the northeast. McCoy was eight miles to the southwest and had the closest store and post office.

Studio portrait photograph of Mary Elizabeth Shields Welsh, wife of John Welsh, mother of Sallie Welsh Hartman. She and her husband homesteaded the J over J Ranch north of Wolcott (now the 4 Eagle Ranch). The story of their early days establishing the ranch was written by their daughter, Sallie Welsh Hartman, and is titled "Early Days in Eagle County" [RARE 978.844 H3331].

"Among the very early pioneers of the area were Elliott and Mary Maxwell who located on 160 acres of land at the confluence of the Grand River and Elk Creek, about four miles west of McCoy about 1896. "Charley Nogal and his wife, Rosetta, arrived in 1885, claiming a homestead on what is now the Eagle River Villas housing complex, north of the Eagle River. Like most homesteaders, their first home was a modest cabin, reportedly built with logs taken from the remains of the first bridge over the river.
