61) Elliott Place

The Tom Elliott place on Rock Creek. The ranch house is on the right with corrals and barn at left. The ranch is in Routt County, two miles north of McCoy. Irrigation was from the creek in order to grow supplementary feed for winter.s

"This house near Bond was the home of John and Mary Payne and family for eight years and during six of those years it was a meal stop for hungry travelers on the main road between State Bridge and McCoy where meals were to be had for twenty-five cents." -- McCoy Memoirs p.140

Buchholz Mesa was sold to E. M. Tabor and Nick and John opened a livery business in Eagle.

Shortly after they were married, Jack and Martha Sigler came out from Denver and homesteaded land in the Volcano area. Their first abode was a cellar or dug-out at an abandoned railroad construction camp, but later they buit this house north of Volcano, one section at a time. The first dwelling on the Kayser desert claim was a tent and it was 1909 or 1910 before this house was built by a Mr. Freeman for Joe Kayser. A number of transients lived in it before members of the Kayser family. Of those, Ralph occupied it the longest. It is presently the home of the Raymond Horn family." -- McCoy Memoirs, p.229

When this picture was taken in 1935 [photo has both 1934 and 1936 written on it], it was a working ranch (with emphasis on work) and had about fifty acres under cultivation, the balance of the 1,100 acres was pasture and timberland. 75) Sneve Ranch

The William Johnson Ranch, formerly the Anthony Sneve Ranch on West Brush Creek. The patent on the ranch was established in 1911. The ranch was purchased by Edna Chambers in 1935. Chambers in turn sold the property to William S. and Nora Johnson in 1938. It is now the site for Sylvan Lake State Park. [A History of Sylvan Lake State Park, by Kathy Heicher]

"Six miles due north of the Conger Mesa and five miles northeast of Volcano lies Long Park in the Routt National Forest. Here the Klumker family and a man named Blake took up 160 acre homesteads in 1912. This view of the Park in 1968 shows the Klumker House and near the road in the distance is the Blake cabin.
