"After the abandonment of the Pioneer Cottonwood school in 1911, another schoolhouse of log construction was built on Antelope Creek a mile or so west of Cottonwood. Ed Robinson donated the land and Arthur Panting, Phil Maxwell and Perry Ault donated the labor with an assist from Tom Wohler. "This was once the home of Elliott Maxwell and wife until Perry Ault bought the place in 1908. He and his wife Lelah and their family of ten lived here until the children were grown, married and had homes of their own. Mr. and Mrs. Ault retired from active farming about 1950 and leased the ranch to their son-in-law, Walter Evans, before buying a house in Kremmling and moving there." -- McCoy Memoirs p.160

Sod-roofed log cabin, in the yard at the "Baily Place," currently (1986) owned by Ben Wurtsmith. John Bailey homesteaded this area of Burns, Colorado, in the 1890's.

15) Bailey School

Bailey School at Burns, Colorado. The log structure is above the "21" Ditch across from the T. Harry Benton home and west of the present Ben Wurtsmith home (formerly known as the Bailey Place). Martha Gates was the teacher as well as Margaret Porter (nee Brooks). Martha is now Mrs. Garland Godbold (1986).

The Bar-Gay Ranch was originally the Hawley place. Gaylord and Barbara Clark bought the house and outbuildings; the land was a school section which they leased for 99 years.
