Herman Newquist's family arrived in the Eagle Valley around 1920. The family would homestead near Bellyache Mountain and Herman has described his childhood, family, and events of the area in several small manuscripts. On August 1, 1951, a stamp commemorating the 75th Anniversary of Colorado statehood was released. The stamp featured the Colorado statehouse and also the iconic Mount of the Holy Cross. Special editions were released in Minturn, Colorado on this date and this particular envelope is from the first day of issue.

A poster announcing the 10th Annual Pilgrimage to the Mount of the Holy Cross led by O.W. (Oloff Wellington) Randall. Randall was the local dentist, but had an affinity for the Mount of the Holy Cross. He began pilgrimages and arranged for services to take place at the top. Those who couldn't make the journey sometimes sent pilgrims with a handkerchief or other item to bring back with them after visiting this religious place.

A business card for the Shrine Lodge, "Starting Place for Mt. Holy Cross". The card advertises steam heat and hot and cold water in all the rooms for $1.50 a night (and up!). In the 1930s and 40s, pilgrimages to the top of Mount of the Holy Cross had become a destination for those believing in its healing and spiritual abilities.
