From Dr. David Kantor's more than thirty years of experience as a therapist, he has learned that romance and relationship are the greatest opportunities we have for becoming the best we can be. My Lover, Myself was written to explain how to receive the maximum benefit from our relationships. According to Dr. Kantor, our lovers are the only mirror for showing us who we really are and who we can become if we are conscious of the three myths that, if left unexplored, control our lives:? The Personal Myth: Why we look for love. This is the broken contract of love, the painful realization of separateness that inevitably comes in childhood. The formation of this myth prompts the search for the right other to repair the wound. If left unexplored, we set ourselves up to have our unspoken contract for being loved broken over and over again.' The Gender Myth: How we look for love, the face we put on for the world--am I a fixer, a survivor, or a protector? This face doesn't always match that of the personal myth, which expresses what you really want, and so it carries the greatest potential for trouble.' The Sexual Fantasy Myth: How we express our desire for love--our sexual persona--the way we want to love and be loved. Having a myth different from our mate's is only troublesome if we don't recognize and accommodate those differences.Dr. Kantor argues that by the time problems between two people need to be worked out verbally, they are farther down the road to causing trouble than is necessary. Paying attention to early warning signs in the emotional and sexual relationship can guide us, into a more fulfilling relationship and more emotional happiness than we could ever imagine.
