Former Minturn resident Rachel Carmen Mascarenas died Sunday at her home in Fruita following a lengthy illness. She was 80. She was born Nov. 30, 1924 in Gulnar, Colo., to Cresencio and Maximiliana Greigo. She lived there until her marriage on Dec. 23, 1942 to Zacharias Mascarenas.

The couple moved many times during the early years of their marriage, but settled in Minturn in 1954 when Zacharias went to work for the New Jersey Zinc Mine at Gilman. They raised their family in Minturn.For six years, Rachel worked as a clerk at Carter’s Clothing Store in Minturn. She was the head housekeeper at Christiania Lodge in Vail, a job that she held for 15 years.

Rachel loved to crochet, and often made sweaters for family members. She also created table cloths and bedspreads out of fine crochet threads, friends and family members said. Her husband retired from the mine in 1972. In 1985, the couple moved to Fruita. They recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.

Rachel is survived by her husband, Zacharias; her daughters, Evelyn Gallegos and LaVerne Espinosa and husband Isaac; her sons, Benjamin Mascarenas and George Mascarenas and wife Francy; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Survivors also include two sisters, Maxine (Celestine) Vallez and Nellie Schuster, and numerous nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses at 2334 H Road in Grand Junction. A gathering and meal will follow at the Fruita Community Center, 101 West McCune in Fruita.Vail Colorado
