HERMAN MEEK KILLED IN ACTION

MINTURN BOY SHOT DOWN OVER GERMANY- WARREN BLACK BACK FROM 25 MONTHS' SERVICE IN PACIFIC.

Official notice has been received by Mrs. Bertha Gibson from the war department that her son, Lt. Herman J. Meek, 21, was killed in action over Germany on march 6, 1944. Meek, a former Eagle and Minturn Boy, joined the army air corps in September, 1942 and was commissioned a second lieutenant the following May. He was first pilot on a Liberator bomber at the time of a mission over Germany when he was killed.

The pilot was born in Montrose November 27, 1922. He made his home in Eagle with his parents, the Val[?] Meeks, and a brother when he was quite small, and was a graduate of Minturn High School with the class of 1939. He worked in Minturn as a grocery clerk and for the railroad signal department near Glenwood until 1941, when he went to Los Angeles to work for one of the Lockheed Aircraft plants, at the same time taking a course at Los Angeles City College to prepare for the air corps. As is customary when a former Lockheed employee is killed in action, a new bomber will soon be dedicated to Lt. Meek.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Bertha Gibson of Los Angeles and a brother Hubert B. Meek, of Grand Junction, a grandmother, Mrs. L. E. Bery, who resides in Los Angeles, and 2 other grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Meek, who live at New Castle.
