VETERAN RAILROAD MAN, W. H. MEEK, WIFE SUCCUMB.
Word of the death of Mr. and Mrs. William H. MEEK, Sr., former Grand Junction residents and aveteran Colorado railroad family, has been received by friends here.
Mr. MEEK Sr., 90, died Aug. 24 at North Hollywood, Calif., after a short illness. His wife, Eva, followed him in death 18 days later after an illness of only a few hours.
The Meeks were Colorado railroad pioneers. Mr. MEEK's first job was as a telegraph operator at Granite, Colo., in 1882 on the Denver and Rio Grande. He became a boomer operator for the next few years, working on the Midland, Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, and the Oregon Short Line.
The Meeks were married in Stonehouse, Nev., Aug. 14, 1890. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary just 10 days before Mr. MEEK's death.
Returning to Colorado shortly after their marriage, Mr. MEEK became agent and operator on the Denver and Rio Grande at Tennessee Pass, Marshall Pass, Redcliff, Paonia, Delta, and Grand Junction between 1890 and 1910. In the latter year they moved again to Oregon where he was with the Oregon Short Line at Robinett, Ore.
In 1917 the couple returned to DeBeque, Colo., where Mr. MEEK was D & RG agent. Prior to his retirement in 1934, he worked for the railroad at Clifton, New Castle, Grand Junction, and Redcliff.
After retirement, the Meeks made their home at Pando, Colo., in the high country just south of Tennessee Pass. When the winters proved too severe, they moved to New Castle in 1938. In 1950, they couple moved to Grand Junction, living at 110 Teller Avenue. In May, 1953, the Meeks moved to California to make their home near their youngest son, William H. MEEK Jr., vice president of the National Association of Foreman.
Both Mr. and Mrs. MEEK were honored guests of the D&RG Oldtimers Club at a meeting held in Grand Junction two years ago. Mr. MEEK was probably the oldest living member of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers in the state, having carried a card since 1882,
Funeral services for Mr. MEEK were held Aug. 28 and on Sept. 16 for Mrs. MEEK. Burial was at Redcliff Cemetery, Redcliff, Colo., in the high country they loved so well.
Surviving are two sons, J. O. MEEK of Toledo, Ohio, and William H. MEEK Jr. of North Hollywood; a foster daughter, Una STICKNEY of Poulsbo, Wash.; 31 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. One of the grandchildren is Hubert MEEK of 1045 Texas Avenue, Grand Junction, assistant division superintendent for the D&RGW. Two sons and two daughters preceded them in death.
