To a Better Land
In the death of Mrs. Phoebe Gilmer, last Saturday at 12:50 p.m. Gilman records the departure of a noble soul whose life was spent for other, and whose epitaph will surely bear the --well done of the Great Master of the universe. Mother of fourteen children now all grown to manhood and womanhood; she was a the age of sixty comparatively young looking, when the protracted illness and the death of her husband broke her down completely.
Since that time she has been gradually fading away despite all that loving sons and daughters could do for her, until the final summons came.
The children who were present at her bedside are C.L.T.B. and J.R. Gilmer, Mrs. A. A. McDonald, Mrs. Lucy Carnahan of Riverton, Neb. and Mrs. Sarah Patterson of Leavenworth, Kansas.
The funeral which took place on Tuesday was the largest ever seen in the county. Services were held at the Gilman church, Reverend Franklyn of Leadville officiating. Magnificent floral tributes adorned the casket and the church was crowded with the friends of the deceased.
Mrs. Phoebe Gilmer was born in Atlanta, Georgia, June 18, 1835. She was a pioneer of Colorado, locating in Georgetown in 1871 and coming to Eagle county in '81 where she has resided since; her goodness winning all to her as friends. The entire county extends sympathy to the bereaved family. [Victor and Georgetown papers please copy.]
