Surface Creek resident Constance "Connie" Lousie Barnes died Oct. 11, 2008, at Delta County Memorial Hospital. She was 75.
Constance Louise Weyand was born to Dallas and Eva Weyand in Craig. She spent her childhood in various locations, as her parents moved around quite a bit, and graduated from Delta High School in 1951.
Connie moved to Hayden and married the love of her life, Marvin D. "Pete" Barnes, on Dec. 18, 1951. They lived and farmed in Hayden. The couple moved to Cedaredge in 1973. Connie and Pete would have celebrated more than 57 years of love and marriage together this year. Pete survives.
Connie was a homemaker and worked part-time at First National Bank of the Rockies in Hayden and the Surface Creek Bank in Cedaredge.
Connie was a member of several organizations in her community, including the Order of the Eastern Star Spruce Chapter No. 129 and Hayden Chapter No. 99. She was a Past Worthy Grand Matron of Colorado, Grand Junction No. 88 of the Social Order of the Beauceant, and a member of the Cedaredge Garden Club and the Cedaredge Literary Club.
Her interests included her love for the Eastern Star and the friends she made along the way. She also enjoyed reading and traveling.
Connie is survived by her husband, Marvin "Pete" Barnes, of Cedaredge; son Randal, Barnes of Ghana; the Agbenu family: Martin, Mavis, Cynthia, Cassandra, Perpetual, Orlonyo, Sehorm Celestial, Rockshell and Wilson; daughter Melanie Gray, and her husband Robert "Buzz," of Olathe; grandchildren Ashley Mehas and her boyfriend Donald "Chip" Fletcher, Don "DJ" Mehas and his girlfriend Eryn Lynch, all of Denver; Quintin and Tammy Gray, and their children: Sebastian Chavez, Benjamin Gray, Adam Gray and his girlfriend Bobbie Richardson, and her children Skye and River Walker, all of Olathe.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Michael and Roger Barnes; and brother Jim Weyand.
A memorial service was held Thursday at Cedaredge United Methodist Church in Cedaredge, with Pastor Deb Edwards and the Order of Eastern Star officiating. A memorial service also was held Saturday at Hayden Congregational Church, with Pastor Janet Babish and the Order of the Eastern Star officiating.
