Eagle Valley Enterprise - February 15, 1973

Funeral services for George W. BARNETT, a longtime resident of the Western Slope, were held Thursday afternoon, February 8, at the Sowder Funeral Home. Rev. Otto B. DUCKWORTH officiated. Burial was in the Rifle Moose Cemetery, with graveside military rites.
Mr. BARNETT was born a George Washington BARNETT, the son of James and Margaret MOUNCE BARNETT on June 19, 1893 at Gary, West Virginia, and passed away at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Grand Junction on February 5th at the age of 79 years.
Mr. Barnett was educated in the West Virginia schools and grew to manhood in that state.
During World War I he served his country in the United States Army, having served with teh American Expeditionary Forces in Europe. He was engaged in three major battles, The Argonne, St. Mihiel and Chateau Thierry.
Following his military service he returned to West Virginia. He was united in marriage with Mae Devona Wyatt on June 17, 1920 at Diggins, West Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. BARNETT made their home at New Hall, West Virginia until 1922 when they moved to Colorado and the Grand Valley community. They farmed on Wallace Creek until 1929 when they moved to Minturn, where he worked as a zinc miner and had served as Minturn's marshall.
At the beginning of World War II, Mr. BARNETT worked a a carpenter at Camp Hale. In 1943 they moved to Rifle where he served as marshall for a period of time, later he worked as a miner for the Bureau of Mines at Anvil Points and retired as a security guard. Mrs. BARNETT passed away in October of 1972.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Veterans of World War I, Bookcliff Barracks No. 1599, and the American Legion.
Survivors include his son, George W. BARNETT, Jr. of Steamboat Springs, a daughter, Mrs. Lester (Annie) MAKIN of Grand Junction; six grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
