FORMER VAILITE ROGER BAUER, 1946--2006.
Longtime Vail-area resident Roger BAUER died at his home in Grand Junction Oct. 16. He was 59.
Bauer was born in Dubuque, Iowa, to Homer and Louise (DIMKE) BAUER. They lived in nearby Galena, Ill., until Homer was transferred to St. Cloud, Minn., in 1951.
After high school, Bauer left for the Florida Keys to take a job in a butcher shop but eventually returned for a year of college at St. Cloud State University. His talents as a butcher later landed him a job as a supervisor in a packing plant in Denver in 1968.
He met his first wife, Colleen DUNLEVY, also from Minnesota, in Denver through a mutual friend soon after. They settled down together in a small converted schoolhouse west of Vail in Squaw Creek. Soon after, they were married and had their only child, Justin.
BAUER started a small meatpacking operation and food distributorship, The Butcher Block.
The BAUERs lived in and around the Vail area, including Red Cliff, Eagle-Vail, Minturn and Edwards. Roger and Colleen parted ways in 1988. Colleen still reside in Edwards.
Roger moved to Grand Junction soon after his son's high school graduation in 1990. There he started a similar food distributorship that later involved into a trucking company.
In 2001, Roger met Susan DURGIN. They lived together and managed the company together until Bauer's death.
BAUER was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Jean MEYER; and his brother, Carl.
He is survived by his brother, Mark; son, Justin; many friends and relatives; and companion Susan DURGIN.
A small celebration of BAUER's life was held for friends and family Oct. 19 in Grand Junction.
